This week's question:
You should have seen this one coming … Who is your favorite male lead character? And why?
Well, there are any number of male equivalents of the sort of female character I like (smart, gsoh, ddf, fta, ld/nd, n/s, w/own teeth and hair*).
Nominees could include Mr Darcy, Gandalph, and the guy who gets the girl in A Suitable Boy. But there is one who stands tall, head and shoulders above the rest: Atticus Finch.
He's a thoroughly good man, fits all the above criteria, seems ever-so-slightly vulnerable for all his strength and character, and looks like Gregory Peck.
* In personal ad shorthand: smart; good sense of humour; drug and disease free; likes fun, travel and adventure; light drinker/non drinker; non smoker; with own teeth and hair.

I'd have to go with Mr Darcy, out of your list, but I prefer Mr Knightley, who is the only one of my choices who would fit the criteria for your excellent personal ad!

I thought Mr. Darcy would appear on some lists. :-) Didn't think about Gandalph, though -- he is a good one. I do need to read TKAM some time.
Oooh, Mr. Darcy, certainly! (I've so enjoyed PBS' Jane Austen series, which just showed Pride and Prejudice two weeks ago with Colin Frith as Mr. Darcy.)
I don't know Atticus Finch, but probably should read him. Tell me more about him. Who the authors...?

Atticus Finch is the lawyer in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, which won the Pulitzer prize - late '50s, early '60s - and regularly gets mentioned in the sort of lists you see at the end of the year, of readers' favourite books of all time. Atticus is a single dad of two kids and lives in small southern town. The crux of the story is his defence of a poor young African-American whom the rednecks of the town have already judged and condemned.
There was a wonderful movie of TKAM made in 1962, starring Gorgeous Gregory Peck. Perfect casting.
You're lucky people who have yet to discover this novel and meet dear Atticus!

See, I knew I would see someone with a much better hero than me. I have a hard time remembering characters...well, and other stuff about books too...

and yes, you should find The History of Love.
I think I would put Gilbert Blythe ahead of Mr Darcy on my list of favourite male characters - and thank you for mentioning A Suitable Boy, I would have forgotten about that one. (In fact I think I love all of Vikram Seth's male characters!)
Oh, I still haven't read it! *kicks self again* I really must! I nearly picked up a copy a few weeks back but got something else instead (that turned out to suck! boo!)
Wow, I'm really embarrassed to have forgotten about Atticus! And Mockingbird is one of my favorite books, too. He is obviously the one character we should all have on our lists of heroes.
Atticus made my very short list as well. Then, I also picked Scout last week.
I've never met Atticus yet. But from all the enthusiasm for him, maybe I ought to change that...
