Tree mystery solved Shelley, in Perth, has a friend who is keen to know what the white-flowering trees are that are so prolific around New York, pictures of which I posted on May 1.
It took me lots of surfing on Google — and lots of interesting time reading the NY City parks and garden department's lists of recommended trees for all sorts of situations — before I discovered this blog, New York, Plants & Other Stuff. Jennifer, who owns and writes this blog, is a landscape architect and was quickly able to tell me that the trees in my photos were Bradford pears (Pyrus calleryana 'Bradford').
The pic above shows the statue of the belligerent General William Tecumseh Sherman with Nike, the Goddess of sneakers Victory, at the southern entrance to Central Park. He looks like he's had a Rachel Ashwell paint job, doesn't he?
